Recertification Season: Why Timely Renewal Matters
Each year in February, Food Alliance reaches out to producers whose certifications are coming due, requesting renewal applications so the recertification process can begin. This is an important moment in the certification cycle; one that helps ensure the continued integrity and credibility of the Food Alliance Certified program.
Food Alliance certification is built on a rigorous third-party audit system designed to verify sustainable practices across farms, ranches, and food operations. Through this process, certified producers demonstrate their commitment to responsible land stewardship, fair working conditions, humane animal care, and long-term environmental sustainability.
Understanding the Certification Cycle
For agricultural producers, Food Alliance certification is valid for three years, after which operations must complete a recertification process to maintain their status.
The recertification process includes:
Submitting an updated application and supporting documentation
Hosting an on-site inspection conducted by an independent auditor
Reviewing the inspector’s report, which includes a summary with the certification decision, and reviewing, signing, and returning the Inspection Response Form
These inspections allow Food Alliance to verify that operations continue to meet the program’s standards and are progressing toward ongoing continual improvement.
Why Early Renewal Helps Everyone
Submitting renewal applications promptly allows the Food Alliance certification team to plan audits efficiently. When applications arrive early, inspections can often be scheduled together with other nearby operations, allowing inspectors to visit multiple farms or ranches in a single trip.
This coordination offers several advantages:
Reduced travel costs for producers
More efficient scheduling for inspectors
Streamlined certification timelines
Lower overall inspection expenses
Inspection costs include inspector time and travel, so coordinating visits in a region can make a meaningful difference in keeping certification accessible and cost-effective for participating farms and ranches.
A Friendly Reminder
Timely recertification helps keep that system running smoothly– for producers, for auditors, and for the growing network of buyers and consumers who rely on the certification.
If your operation is due for recertification this year, we encourage you to submit your renewal application as soon as possible. Early submissions help us coordinate inspections efficiently and keep certification costs as manageable as possible for everyone involved.
If you have questions about the renewal process or timelines, the Food Alliance team is always happy to help. Email Shaila at shaila@foodalliance.org to ask questions and learn more.
