OPHA Presents: Food for Thought

An evening of thought provoking discussion, networking, food and drink. Learn why you should care about and engage in building a sustainable food system for the health of people, our community, and our environment. We will be screening a short segment of the Academy Award nominated documentary, "Food, Inc.", hosting a panel discussion of local experts, including Scott Exo, executive director of Food Alliance, as well as a Q&A session.

21st Annual PASA Farming for the Future Conference

The theme of this year's PASA conference is, "Breaking Ground for a New Agriculture: Cultivating Versatility and Resilience." Featuring keynote speaker Brian Halweil, editor of Edible East End and Senior Fellow at the Worldwatch Institute, and more than 100 workshops.

National Restaurant Association Show
Each year the NRA Show attracts industry professionals from all 50 states and 100+ countries. It is a key destination for international foodservice business and an opportunity to see the entire food supply chain in one place. The show features culinary demonstrations, food and beverage products, kitchen equipment and supplies, and operational resources from 1,800+ exhibitors. Food for Thought Conference

A conference to be held on the campus of the University of Portland. Speakers include author Michael Pollan and Bon Appetit Management Co. CEO Fedele Bauccio. Food Alliance executive director Scott Exo will moderate a panel entitled Sustainable and Local Food. Tickets to the Michael Pollan keynote event are available through Ticketmaster and the Chiles Center Box Office on campus.

Innovative Agriculture for the 21st Century

Modern agriculture techniques have given us unprecedented amounts of food. However, critics note the large amounts of water, energy, and chemicals required for these yields have uncertain impacts on long-term soil fertility and the health of both humans and the environment. Some growers are working to address these issues by practicing cutting-edge techniques that incorporate ecological principles. A panel presentation, including Food Alliance certification director Karen Lewotsky, will discuss organic and sustainable agricultural practices.
